20 years later. Return of investigation on an old working‑class city

If any research object most often includes a set of constraints, surveying young people in working-class urban neighborhoods also involves difficulties. Indeed, the residential space of HLM housing projects reveals a large number of social obstacles: the possibility of interviewing girls remains limited to researchers of the same sex, meeting fathers is most often met with resistance from their children, the necessary adaptation to the social practices of the street and the existence of conflicting relations with the institutions weigh on the work of investigation. Carrying out work in immersion with young people from “cities” therefore implies a fine and nuanced understanding of the social issues on the ground.
