Sulfites are among the 37 excipients with a possible known effect listed by the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM) that can be found in French pharmaceutical registered drugs. They can trigger severe hypersensitivity reactions and bronchospasm in intolerant patients. General guidelines for sensitive patients merely advise “avoiding wines and products with high sulfite content,” without specifying the risk–if any–of prescribing and dispensing medications containing sulfites. In this article, we discuss the use of sulfites in French registered drugs: Who are the patients at risk of intolerance reactions? Which drugs contain sulfites? In what quantity? And should their administration be monitored in sensitive patients?
