Very early on, probably from the beginning of extra-uterine life, the infant encounters and invests objects exterior to himself/herself. This exteriority supposes a third function in order to delimit the infant’s intrapsychic world from the external world. Can we or should we speak about an early Oedipus, although the objects are partial objects identified more with functions than with persons? The author states that the first objects invested by the child are narcissistic objects, quite different from Oedipal objects, which are loaded with a history and correspond to the actual Oedipal period. Narcissistic objects are invested in a narcissistic mode, oedipal objects in a libidinal one. This distinction raises doubts about the expression “early Oedipus” being used to name the very first forms of triangulation. On the other hand, one can consider those pre-Oedipal forms of triangulation as precursors of the actual Oedipus giving a legitimacy to child psychoanalysis as a genuine form of psychoanalysis.
