This paper reviews the relationship between Euroscepticism and populism in political parties’ discourse. It argues that Euroscepticism is a variation of populism in that populist parties appropriate Eurosceptic arguments to reinforce their anti-elite discourse. Our analysis is based both on a review of six far right and far left parties’ election platforms—namely those of the Parti du Travail de Belgique, Vlaams Belang, Socialistische Partij, Partij voor de Vrijheid, the Parti de gauche, and the Front National—and on the quantitative study of Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s appearances in the French media during the 2014 European election campaign. It has enabled us to confirm our assumption, with slight nuances regarding the Parti de gauche’s candidate, Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
