Parental experience of the diagnostic pathway in autism: discussion of a qualitative study

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2021. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The care pathway of a child with autism has a strong impact on the parental experience. In addition, parents are the main contacts for professionals taking care of these children. Finally, these parents, individually or collectively, take actions and influence the perception of autism in the social field. We try to apprehend their experience of their child’s diagnostic and care pathway, with a qualitative study based on the testimonies of parents who consulted for an assessment in an Autism Diagnostic Clinic between 2007 and 2015. We describe certain salient aspects of their pathway, from their first concerns to their child’s diagnostic assessment, and we report the difficulties encountered as well as the psychological reactions associated with them. Finally, we discuss these results that highlight the need for the professional to provide the parents with an active position in care.
