The article interrogates the common place according to which Charles De Coster’s Légende d’Ulenspiegel (1867) would be the matrix text of Belgian French-speaking literature and its publishing the founding moment of Belgian identity. It does so addressing the carnivalesque heterogeneousness of the work: pertaining simultaneously to several genres without ever representing them in a canonical way, it inhabits uneasily between novel and epic.
