Thomas Aquinas on the role of matter in generation

This article offers a study of Thomas Aquinas’s theory of generation through the lens of his distinctive definition of matter. Following a brief overview of the Thomistic characterization of matter, the first part of this article describes the metaphysical principles underlying Aquinas’s explanation of generation. Then, the second part focuses on the role played by the concepts of “disposition” and “potency” in his solution to the problem of generation.
