Increasingly left behind in the competitiveness stakes by China and the United States, the European Union is revising its economic policy. It is introducing new, more interventionist and protectionist instruments to revive its industry, particularly in the defense sector, and is restarting efforts to complete the internal market in the hope that greater autonomy will stimulate growth. The challenge is to combine the revitalization of internal production with the diversification offered by free trade agreements.
