Using Address Forms in French Press Interviews

The article shows that the contexts in which address forms occur in press interviews are correlated to the type of media where they appear. Address forms are assessed in terms of the mechanisms governing the double levels of reception obtaining in an interview, and in terms of the impact of the interviewee's profile, the media, and the readership on a selection of linguistic markers. In newspapers, the V-form ('Vous') is not so much a deferential as an unmarked pronoun, whose use is linked to the informative aim of this type of media. Conversely, the use of address forms in specialized magazines is linked to the interviewee's language community practices, which he/she shares with the readership
