Cultural variation in on-line communications : an ethnographic study of Moroccan discussion forums Considering that Netiquette represents a set of rules symbolising "good use" which applies to the Internet in general (electronic mail, forums of discussion, mailing lists, IRCchat), one may wonder to what local and cultural use they can be put. To answer this question, we will focus on the uses that Moroccan surfers make of the "good use" standards on the Internet. We will analyse Moroccan discussion forums to see how these surfers make world-wide rules their own and we'll highlight the possible differences between the rules of "good use" and the actual national practices observed. Our main purpose is to see whether Moroccan surfers make these rules their own in their everyday on-line dialogues, and to observe and describe some of the on-line comunication(al) habits that are emerging in the Moroccan community. This ethnographic analysis will touch on various conversational aspects: openings and closings, greetings, themes, linguistic rituals, lengths of messages, codeswitching, etc.
