The catechumenate - What can it tell us?

The catechumenate, to which the Church is turning in these tough times in the West as regards the transmission of the faith to the next generation, must continue to be valued for its own sake, for its specific relevance in welcoming and accompanying many of our contemporaries who wish to become Christians. Thanks to its long experience, it reminds us of the grieving that is necessary in order that the nostalgia for a Christianity that is no longer should not prevent the Church from proposing a serene Christianity to those who turn to it today. But does the Church still have this desire to be fruitful that is indispensable if we are to engender new believers? Adult catechumens can be considered as an opportunity, for they experience the Church in its capacity to receive and accompany those of our contemporaries who are in search of meaning and of God. It is not a question of finding miracle solutions for evangelisation, but rather of allowing God first of all to take the initiative, and to adjust our own steps to those of the newcomers to the faith. The catechumenate does not banish the current atmosphere of anguish. On the contrary, it shows the need for a radical transformation in the way the faith is presented both today and for the future.
