Parenthood during the first school years in France (3-6 years old): point of view of mothers and fathers from higher socio-professional categories, living in a neighborhood which is part of the national high-priority educational network

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2022. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This paper presents aspects of larger research on parenting, during the very first school years. Thirty-four interviews were conducted with fathers and mothers who mostly belonged to higher socio-professional categories, and whose children, aged 3 to 6, attended a state-run school in a Parisian neighborhood that is part of the national high-priority educational network. Results show that both fathers and mothers are engaged in a daily race, with tight schedules, but that women tend to be the main family organizers. About school, women are more concerned with their children’s present experiences, whereas men tend to worry more at the prospect of their children attending the French equivalent of secondary school. Besides, mothers reflect more on their parenting than fathers do, which entails both self-examination and understanding of their child; they also feel more responsible for their child.
