The upsurge of memorial claims in France does not, according to the author, stem directly from the current economic crisis: it dates back to the 1960s and is more likely a contestation movement directed against the French national story. To ensure that historical truths may again be heard in the public sphere, historians, as well as their counterparts in the other social sciences, must redefine their methods, and in particular desolidarize themselves from the Nation in the times of globalization and individualism.
