Standards are often perceived as business constraints. However, the very essence of standards, defined by French law, is to protect the general interest, as they encourage economic development and innovation that is mindful of social responsibility and sustainable development. In this light, standards can be considered strategic opportunities for organizations. This research highlights how architectural firms, faced with the building sector’s many restrictions, can transform what they tend to perceive as regulatory constraints into strategic opportunities. Based on a qualitative study within architectural firms, this research shows that the strategic involvement of these organizations in standards management reduces the risks associated with an insufficient grasp of standards and promotes internal innovations. The research also provides avenues for the development of a transversal strategic cooperation network aimed at improving social performance and standards implementation in the building sector.
