In New Caledonia, coastal areas are most prized by tourists. Consequently, managing the number of tourists is a priority if we are to protect these areas from ecological disaster. A wise policy needs to be formulated to counter the negatives effects of tourism on local resources without impeding tourism itself, which remains the main economic activity of the island. The paper also proposes a roadmap for actors.
