Introduction: A city-based therapeutic patient education (TPE) program can only continue to run if new patients are regularly recruited. The difficulty of recruitment is a central issue in city-based TPE programs. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the increase in the number of referrals and inclusions of new patients in the POLIPATO TPE program in 2020 compared with the previous two years, through the development of a new recruitment method. Method: Following the design of new materials, the program was actively communicated to health care professionals (GPs, pharmacists, nurses) in the health centers involved in the program and in the corresponding towns. This is a rural-to-semi-rural area. Four recruitment days were organized over two consecutive months: professionals were encouraged to briefly propose the program to any patient meeting the inclusion criteria. The patient was then signposted toward inclusion in the program. Results: On these four days, one-hundred patients were reported (eighty-nine by a doctor, eight by a nurse, three by a pharmacist), and twenty-nine were included. In 2020, the number of patients referred increased threefold, and the number of patients included rose by 50% compared with 2018 and 44.4% compared with 2019. Conclusion: This recruitment method proved effective for referral. However, it was mainly GPs who took part. A different recruitment method should be sought for pharmacists and nurses.
