The present article deals with the meaning of the Latin expression boni homines or boni viri in judicial and legal sources of the Middle Ages. In contrast to some recent studies, this paper is not interested in establishing who were the boni homines / boni viri, nor is it concerned with the functions fulfilled by them. Its goal is to understand what the expression itself means in a judicial context.
