In Brazil, dramatic realism, emulating the French example, imposed itself in the mid–19th century as an instrument of predilection for the men of letters who longed to establish a great national culture. Yet, if a "society of the spectacle" was born in the second half of the 19th century, it hardly corresponded to the requirements of the playwrights who were afflicted by the success of light works for audiences who were more concerned with entertaining themselves than with learning.
