Exile and Zionism: The emergence of Zionism in the Jewish community of Damascus during the First World War
Type de matériel :
31
The arrival in Damascus of Zionist exiles from Palestine during the First World War introduced the local Jewish community to the idea of Zionist nationalism. Damascus Jews who had experienced the collapse of the old world order were looking for an identity and patterns of organization within the new reality. Zionism seemed accessible and attractive both because of the proximity of Palestine and what seemed to be the movement’s practical success. Political events such as the Balfour Declaration also brought the Damascus community closer to Zionism.
