At the intersection of the conceptual history of the indigenous subject, the history of anthropological thought, and the history of indigenism, this paper reconstructs a long debate that took place between 1940 and 1948 in the anthropological and indigenista milieu in Mexico. The analysis show how those years were determining in the process of establishing a fixed signification to the category “Indian”, which has survived until today.
