The capture of Algiers in 1830 is still often seen as marking the advent of a new, allegedly civilizing French imperialism. Works on the periodization of British imperialism and a reconsideration of the available evidence through a global lens tend to undermine this perception. Algiers was the culmination of a lengthy effort at reinvention, as well as a new beginning. In particular, Algiers confirmed rather than caused French liberals’ move toward colonial expansion.
