Through the case study of monetary cooperation agreements between France and fourteen countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, this paper focuses on the role of this currency in the implementation of economic development policies in former French colonies in Africa. From decolonization to the transfer of sovereignty, and from the public debt crisis to the multilateral institutions’ trusteeship, the currency appears to be a management tool for state policies that support development.
