We propound a rhetorical and argumentative perspective on the soundbite “culture isn’t a commodity like any other”. We reconstruct the different stages of its germination and subsequent stabilization in the public sphere during the debate on “cultural exception” until its becoming a formula, highlighting its argumentative role through the hierarchization of values opposing culture to commodity.
