Responsibility, Autonomy, and Professional Identity

In a context of social crisis and of increasing workers’ discontent, the resurgence of professional identities is one of the most striking observations to be made about employees with good qualifications. It is not a question of a defensive constraint on labor, but rather of a situation in which the active subject exposes himself to risk, puts his responsibility on the line, acts autonomously, and uses his know-how to resolve complex situations and contribute to the “running of the business” all within a context of strict control and high uncertainty. Self-realization, socialization within a peer group, and a sense of participation can thereby be achieved. The question to be answered pertains to the institutional recognition granted to such a commitment, and the role of the managerial line in this process.
