Introduction : For an orthodontic treatment plan to be effective, the timing of treatment is crucial, and must be based on the estimation of the child’s growth stage, skeletal maturation, and therefore bone age. Via a single lateral cephalometric radiograph (LCR), it is possible to obtain sufficient information to place the patient on their growth curve, since the vertebral stages are good indicators of physiological maturity. Objective: The objective of this research study was to statistically validate, on a large sample, the cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method, with a view to reliably and reproducibly determining the vertebral maturation stage. Materials and methods: Hand-wrist radiographs and lateral cephalometric radiographs of thirty patients were included to implement the CVM assessment. To validate this method, panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms of 192 children were included in the study. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (rho) was then performed to assess correlations and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) was used to analyze concordances. Conclusion: The correlations and concordances obtained were statistically significant, positive, and moderate. The CVM method appears to be reliable and practical for use in orthodontic practices.
