Urban projects deal with a profusion of visual media representation in order to encourage citizens to participate. Although citizens are initially expected to display knowledge of local usages, photo and video convey many more forms of knowledge. They therefore contribute to constructing and showing a different image of these citizens. Both media aim at fostering the fairness of debates and thus contribute to equal access to public discourse. They show both the individual and the collective nature of participatory processes. Although citizens are engaged as individuals, they are rarely invited to share the editing of the collective representations??”whether visual or social??”produced by photo and video.
