The Fifth Republic historically represented the completion of social and political consensus in post–World War II France, a consensus that was shattered with the end of the Cold War. To resume its central position in the European construction process, France must change its own methods of functioning (political, economic and social) and radically redefine its vision of Europe’s future, that is to say, its relations with American power too.
