This article suggests that the tactics and strategy used by jihadists are not completely new. The strategic posture of jihadist groups can indeed be compared to the one adopted by guerilla movements in the 1950s–1970s. Jihadists and guerilla fighters have at least three common features: they are aware of their asymmetric position; they try to introduce tactical innovations to prevent their defeat; and they know that the necessary condition for victory is popular support.
