The strategic posture of jihadist groups can indeed be compared to the one adopted by guerilla movements in the 1950s–1970s. Jihadists and guerilla fighters have at least three common features: they are aware of their asymmetric position; they try to introduce tactical innovations to prevent their defeat; and they know that the necessary condition for victory is popular support.
