The antiparasitic effect of Moringa oleifera seeds on wastewater

The main objective of this work is to evaluate the antiparasitic activity of Moringa oleifera seeds in the purification of wastewater. Parasitological analyses were carried out on three types of water: raw sewage (RS), treated sewage (TS), and wastewater treated with M. oleifera seeds. The results showed that raw sewage is highly polluted and has high levels of parasites (Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba coli, Giardia lamblia and Ascaris sp, Strongyloides sp, Trichuris spp, Ancylostoma sp). A decrease in helminth 9 eggs/L was recorded in treated sewage, however this value remained above the Algerian and WHO standards. For wastewater treated with M. oleifera seeds, the results showed a total absence of parasites. For treated sewage, the removal rate for protozoan cysts and helminth eggs was 85.86% and 58.02%, respectively. Meanwhile, for water treated with M. oliefera, the removal rate was 100% and 100%, respectively.
