This article examines the key elements of European approaches to regulating the relationship between religion, law, and the state. It analyzes the main challenges faced by these approaches, in particular how immigration and religious diversity pose problems to the established models. Finally, it considers how European approaches compare to those of the United States, and whether the approach of US institutions can provide a useful template for European states and pan-European institutions.
