Mystical weapons. Reflections on the Liberian War

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2000. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The 1989-97 civil war in Liberia provided many opportunities to observe practices of violence, including those believed to operate in a mystical dimension. Certain military techniques, such as the use of anti-bullet medicine and the consumption of human flesh, were described by Liberians as a form of witchcraft. The word “witchcraft” seems to have changed in meaning significantly during the twentieth century. The present article studies this development, and demonstrates how the constitution of an oligarchic form of power was accompanied by the redefinition of certain religious ideas.
