Herbert Simon made design a cornerstone of his thought on the sciences of the artificial. This article aims to illustrate the contribution his work made toward understanding the organization. Even after more than fifty years, his work is still highly topical. This article first discusses how the concept of design was constructed over time, then exhibits the contributions design has made to our understanding of organizations, and, finally, considers the implications this has had in terms of attitudes toward conducting research, coaching, and training in design.
