The sciences of the artificial: A revolutionary conceptualization of the fundamental sciences to be further developed

Although the concept of the sciences of the artificial first appeared in the 1960s, it has not yet received the attention it deserves given that this archetypal science provides a useful tool to many scientific disciplines for their conceptualization as sciences. It is likely that their name—the sciences of the artificial—as well as their revolutionary and not yet fully conceptualized character, hampered their dissemination. Researchers who have seized upon on Simon’s pioneering ideas, seeking to flesh out this notion, as well as the associated notion of design science, have pursued different paths. In the process, some have occasionally lost sight of the original spirit that Simon intended: that the sciences of the artificial are as fundamental as natural science.
