Design, Science, and Technology: What are the models and ideal types of design science research?

While Science and Design seem to be singled out and treated as core disciplines in Design Science Research (DSR), Technology tends to have a more tenuous role or is not properly distinguished from Design. The coherence and consistency of the elements of this trialectic do not seem to have been thoroughly examined in the existing theoretical work on design science-based research in management and information systems (IS). To clarify the coherence and consistency of this trialectic made up of Science, Technology, and Design, this article proposes a model of DSR based on the identification and distinction of the three fundamental disciplines of Design, Technology, and Science and their respective disciplinary matrices. This article also aims aim to construct and illustrate, through examples drawn from scientific papers, three ideal types of DSR that are different configurations of these three fundamental disciplines: artifactual research; technological research; and artifactual AND technological research.
