Supporting entrepreneurs in difficulty: Questions about a complex phenomenon

The literature on entrepreneurship focuses on one hand on supporting entrepreneurs who are launching their firms and on the other on entrepreneurial failure. However, it seems that no academic study has looked into supporting failed entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the notion of entrepreneurial failure only makes up one part of a broader reality, that of entrepreneurs facing difficulties, because before failing these individuals were of course in (great) difficulty and, having failed, they then had to face subsequent difficulties. Besides, to face such difficulties, entrepreneurs need to be supported. Here we propose a definition of the entrepreneur in difficulty by using the notion of a failure situation. Thus, entrepreneurs in difficulty construct, through their actions and interactions with their environment, a desired future that consists in either avoiding or getting out of a failure situation. Doing this leads us to question the complexity of support in this case in order to propose some avenues of research.
