This article develops a phenomenological description of high-potential subjects. It focuses on the form of presence and being-in-the-world of subjects with high intellectual potential. The notion of psychic flesh is proposed as the phenomenological possibility of describing the psyche’s own experience. High-potential subjects experience both lucidity and melancholy, a sense of imposture combined with a painful awareness of complexity and infinity. Their thinking frequently takes the form of constellations of ideas that respond to, and resonate with, each other in a dazzling way. Their rich imagination is the driving force behind their creativity. These highly sensitive “old kids” only associate with people who have the same kind of presence, that is, people with high potential, thus minimizing the suffering caused by the gap with the rest of society. Their temporality is particular, both rapid and punctuated by procrastination. Encountering a high-potential person is to experience the multilayered texture of the interpersonal matrix. Phenomenological description seems to open up interesting avenues of reflection for a better understanding of the specificity of thought and being-in-the-world of high-intelligence subjects.
