The Spanish and the European Union: Assessment for the 20th Anniversary of Spain’s Entry into the Organization

This article presents the central elements of Spanish public opinion relating to the European Union by presenting a description of its evolution during the twenty years since accession. To this end, we analyze the overall relations of Spanish citizens with the EU as well as their perceptions of European identity, their judgments on the merits of their countryís membership and their involvement as Spanish citizens in matters related to this institution. Data sources include the latest survey data (May 2006) from the Centro de Investigaciones Científicas reporting Spanish opinion on the integration process as well as various Eurobarometer surveys of Europeans carried out on behalf on the European Commission.
