Adolescents with Eating Disorders: The Experience of a Therapy Group

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2004. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Many adolescent girls have subclinical eating disorders, but health care strategies do not always respond to their stage of development and specific needs. To answer increasing demands, group therapy was developed for these patients in the multidisciplinary adolescent health unit (UMSA) at the Lausanne university hospital. A psychologist and a physician were the therapists of the group, as a representation of the interdisciplinary team in the unit and a symbol of the shift from soma to psyche that must be experienced by these adolescents to progress from the physical constraints of their body to the exploration of their mind. The development of the group and the different stages of its evolution show the advantage of co-therapy and of the interaction between the group members to increase the understanding of their complaints by being able to speak about them and gain more and more autonomy in their lives. Group dynamics resonate well under the therapeutic requirements of adolescence and its advantages are discussed for the treatment of adolescent girls presenting eating disorders.
