Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : To what extent can a mental universe be reconstructed by brain data? The arguments classically put forward regarding the limits of neuroscience have insisted on elementary psychological aspects such as the subjective experience of qualia. However, here we emphasize the richness of mental universes. A brief analysis of the clinical field allows us to highlight the practical irreducibility of mental universes, due to the need to situate illness and care in a horizon of meaning. This empirical fulcrum gives us the opportunity to shed (a little) light on the complexity of mental universes as reflected in the ability to “navigate” through possible worlds. This ability seems beyond the reach of current neuroscientific models, while remaining accessible to scientific analysis—as the paradigm of navigating virtual universes on the world wide web attests—, even if addressing such a challenge implies new developments in mind science.
