Cannabis use and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications

Cannabis is the most used illicit substance in the world, particularly among young people. The number of publications about the relationship between cannabis use and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular complications has increased. Smoking marijuana has been shown to increase the risk of myocardial infarction onset within one hour of consumption. Cardiac sudden deaths have been reported. Brain damage causing stroke and which is reversible upon cessation of use has been shown. Rare cardiac and cerebral complications have been described for synthetic cannabinoids. Causality link, although not proven, is suggested by the existence of a temporal relation between occurrence of these complications and cannabis use. Thus, it seems necessary to establish epidemiological studies with a good standard of evidence and to screen for illicit drugs, including cannabis, when myocardial infarction, stroke, or sudden deaths among young people occur.
