Psychotherapy is no longer a unified field, since so many techniques, goals and methods have appeared. We need guidelines to propose new forms of teaching psychotherapy.Research can help us in this endeavour. Our research on mother-infant psychotherapy shows that therapists and patients differ greatly in their goals and ideals. Clinicians aim at following a precise technique; patients want mainly to be understood. Patients are able to contribute to the choice of indication. We now ask them to decide what form of therapy they would prefer.
