Could the “discontents in civilization” and all the “ethnic cleansings” so present in our century be interpreted as failures in the sublimation process? Beyond conceptions regarding the first topic, this question pertains to Freud’s findings on the alliance of the ego with the death instincts in order to achieve sublimation. In fact, it relates to treating the libidinal void of the primary identifications in narcissism, there where the ego is rooted in the foreign or the unknown.
