Intra-party criticism: Betraying your candidate?

Political communication is usually regulated by partisan loyalty: political professionals criticize opponents from other political parties, and defend their own party candidates. Intra-party criticism is witnessed before the general election (primaries) or after it (right to inventory once the election has passed). For some time, however, there has been a significant change: intra-party criticism has become more frequent. There has been a decline in partisan loyalty in favor of a right to authenticity and sincerity claimed by some politicians. The stigma associated with the figure of the traitor (Éric Besson betraying Ségolène Royal in 2007, Manuel Valls betraying Benoît Hamon in 2017) can then be turned around under the premise that the priority is to be faithful to one’s convictions.
