The psychological processes involved in becoming a mother can transform drug addiction problems. They can lead to the reorganisation of object relations which allowed a decentring from the drug object and an investment in the real child who is gradually recognised in its otherness. Our observations from our clinic in CSAPA (center for care, support and prevention in addictology) and research work with pregnant addicted women and young addicted mothers, demonstrate that all women do not have the same opportunities to invest in their children. These opportunities depend on the ability to gradually integrate and develop, first, the somatopsychic changes and the manifestation of drives caused by pregnancy, and the presence of the other within oneself, and then the issues summoned by the regression resulting from child care. This remains fragile and is often affected by neonatal withdrawal syndrome and marital dynamics. It may lead to the resumption of drug use.
