This article analyses the genesis of a French-speaking scientific community specialized in the study of speech, in order to examine what is at stake when a “human” science acquires sophisticated instruments and hires specialists in these instruments. In the case studied, the increase of instrumentation is followed by a new definition of goals and research methods. From a study of speech as a human action, there is a movement towards the development of human-machine communication technology.
