On November 27, 2016, François Fillon was designated as a candidate for the 2017 presidential election. The very same day, the Front National’s online community began a negative online campaign using the hashtag #LeVraiFillon (“The Real Fillon”). Through the publication of various content on several social media platforms over a number of months, the aim was to attack Fillon’s record, agenda, and character. The analysis of this campaign underlines the way the Front National fosters and controls its community’s hostility toward political opponents.
