The Bulgarian socialist Party started a process of self-renovation while keeping part of the legacy of the communist past, which allowed it to build its legitimacy on a nostalgic speech. Once came to power by the ballot in 1994, the former communists restored links between their party and the state and with the return on the political scene of former leaderst allowed certain members of the economic nomenklatura to prosper.
