Earned income and non-standard employment: Comparing societal and individual analyses

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2015. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article aims to study the relationship between non-standard employment and earned income at the societal macro level, and individual micro level, drawing on data from the EU-SILC and EU-LFS surveys to compare the two. The authors take a descriptive approach, using macro-level correlations to demonstrate the absence of any link between non-standard employment and earned income. A high proportion of non-standard income in a given country does not lead to a rise — or decrease — in earned income inequality. Conversely, at the micro level, the majority of European countries reveal a strong, significant connection between non-standard employment and low wages: Unstable and part-time employment often correlate with low wages. This article uses a logistic regression for three countries: France, the Netherlands, and the UK, to demonstrate not only the negative effects of part-time work and unstable employment on earned income, but also the impact of gender, education level, and activity sector on the chances of being in low-waged employment.
