While we often expect philosophers to provide answers to our questions, Sophie Nordmann explores another aspect of the philosophical vocation. In her view, what characterizes philosophers is instead their practice of “questioning.” This ability to question is the best antidote to all dogmatism. Whatever the subject, it is not just an intellectual exercise. It brings into play a subversive attitude that, in every era, shakes up society and the individuals who take part in it. For it opens up breaches, concrete spaces where freedom of thought and being can be exercised. This rereading of the history of philosophy is a real breath of fresh air.
