This study explores the phenomenon of sajiao in Taiwan, a linguistic practice primarily associated with women and characterized by a childlike voice and behavior. Traditionally used in intimate contexts, sajiao reinforces an image of femininity and dependence while serving as a politeness strategy to subvert power dynamics and get one’s way. Over the past decade, its use has expanded to include men, even in professional contexts, reflecting significant societal change. This study sheds empirical light on the persistence and evolution of this practice within a changing society. The findings confirm that sajiao is adopted by people of all genders and sexual orientations—in this sense, it transcends boundaries.
